FROM ACROSS THE POND: Agnes Obel

Born in Denmark, but based in Germany, Agnes Obel crafts delicate, wistful music. Her album Philharmonics contains instrumental tracks as well as simply-arranged songs that highlight her warm folky voice against a varied backdrop of piano, cello and harp. Her music has the sort of composer/songwriter crossover  appeal that could soundtrack a series of bleakly beautiful European indie films. She has already enjoyed great success in mainland Europe, and is now generating keen interest in the UK and US. Heading to SXSW, Obel intends to perform all the tracks from the album and her angelic sound will offer an oasis of calm and reflection amidst the bustle of the festival.
