HEAR THIS: Jen Cloher

August 14. 2017 | By Wayne Jessup

It’s been a long journey from 2013’s Australian Music Prize shortlisted In Blood Memory to her new self-titled LP, but Mellbourne-based Jen Cloher faced down the demons of self-doubt and came up a cropper. Recorded mostly live, it’s raw and stripped down, playing to showcase Cloher’s lyrical strengths. “Forgot Myself” is a slow-burner that encapsulates her ongoing travails.
“Regional Echo” comes with an evocative video, featuring bassist Bones Sloane on his home turf with family and friends (Shoutout Goulburn!). The small-town anthem is where the action shifts away from confessional to widescreen and reveals its true intent as a love letter to Australia. In October, you’ll get your chance to see her here in the States, on the 18th at the Fox Theater in Oakland, with dates across the US and Canada to follow.
