TRACKS OF THE WEEK – 1/16/20 Edition

January 16. 2020 | By Wayne Jessup

This week at Tracks we celebrate the return of Phosphene. Their last act before leaving the Bay Area for Portland was to record some new tracks, and they’re finally surfacing. “Cocoon” is the captivating lead single from the forthcoming second full length, Lotus Eaters, due out this summer.

Agnes Obel has a new LP, Myopia, out 2/21 on Blue Note Records. “Broken Sleep” is the second single. The Berlin-based Dane has sold out two shows at the Hollywood Forever Masonic Lodge on 1/23 and 1/24. If you didn’t get tickets, fear not, she’ll be back in May with Dead Can Dance.

Newly signed to Saddle Creek, Madison, Wisconsin’s finest, Disq, allow us a glimpse of their “Daily Routine”, the opening salvo from their debut LP Collector, coming 3/6. They’ll be on the road to support it this spring, including stops at the Echo (LA) on 4/21, and Cafe Du Nord (SF) on 4/22, both dates supported by Girl Friday.

All purpose Renaissance Woman Hether Fortune has unleashed art from every direction since the end of Wax Idols, including a string of singles, and a volume of poetry, Waiting In Various Lines (2013-2017). Her latest creation is an ominous collaboration with Cremation Lily on “This Song Brought To You By A Falling Bomb”, a Thursday cover with all proceeds to benefit the Bernie Sanders campaign.

Each single from the new Algiers LP There Is No Year has ratcheted up the excitement, and the third single “We Can’t Be Found” is no exception. Out this week on Matador Records, the slow burner finds Algiers at their sharpest.
