HEAR THIS: The Mountain Goats

July 27. 2012 | By Gina Cargas

On July 25th, The Mountain Goats released “Cry For Judas,” the first single off Transcendental Youth, the band’s fourteenth—yes, fourteenth—studio album out this October. Like so many TMG albums before it, Transcendental Youth will tell stories of outcasts, recluses, and other downtrodden folks struggling to survive. But if “Cry For Judas” is any indication, the Mountain Goats have abandoned all hints of their early lo-fi style. Full-bodied and vital, “Cry For Judas” balances rousing horn arrangements with poignant and painful lyrics. It’s a call to arms for masochists, a celebration of self-destruction—and it’s free to download. Though if you feel like throwing the band a buck, you can do that too.

Transcendental Youth—or, as frontman John Darnielle calls it, “the Satan record”—is out October 2nd on Merge Records. Pre-order it here.
