The Halloweekend Saturday night costume dance party at Mezzanine in San Francisco was a glorious dance party with exceptional live music and skilled DJs. Midi Matilda, San Francisco’s own lovable and smiling indie-pop duo opened for the quirky and energetic YACHT. DJs matrixxman and BluntObjekt held the party together like a high-grade audio glue. The event was presented by Mr. Roboto and WillCall and MCed by Ticketfly‘s public relations liaison, Amy Miller, dressed as a Christmas tree.
The bands were fantastic. The most important commonality between Midi Matilda and Yacht is their unmitigated ability to get people’s bodies moving when they play music. Midi Matilda kicked it off, dressed as Wayne and Garth of Wayne’s World, with their highly catchy bubbly electro pop. Drummer Logan Grime’s flashy white smile could be seen at a distance, and when it caught the stage lights, the beam that was reflected entranced the audience and seemed to teach the lyrics to them; people were singing along and rocking out.
YACHT is one of the best live acts on tour these days. Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, the core of YACHT, talk of metaphysical wholeness and living an empowered life. You can feel the weight of their presence from everywhere in the audience. Evans’ appearance is mesmerizing; her costume was tic-tac-toe and she was the sexiest version of the game ever conceived. They talk with the audience and emit old friend vibes. YACHT’s sound is alive and fresh and they foster the intimacy of a living room dance party.
The costumes were fabulous. The music was exciting. The bands could have played a bit longer and started a bit earlier, but overall it was a great night out.
