PICTURE THIS: Ghost And Gale @ Amnesia, SF 11/14/13

An owl walks into a bar. That’s how the joke starts right? We did walk into a bar, it was Amnesia in San Francisco’s Mission District. Like most bars, it’s a noisy place. Any band in a place like that has to compete with all the talking and general noise that is pervasive.

Ghost and Gale managed to do something quite rare. Through most of their set this bar went silent. It’s a little eerie to hear the noise in a place like this diminish to nothing, then explode to applause at the end of a song, only to go silent again. Brodie Jenkins and David Luning have voices that were meant to harmonize together. It really shows with a song like “New Love,” a beautiful tune about something not so pleasant – the end of a relationship. Their voices layered over cello and piano with just the right bit of bass to bring it all together.
