BROOKLYN BEAT: Mindtroll

Mindtroll

Do you have ten minutes to spare and want to spend it having more fun than you usually do sitting at your computer all day? Then I highly recommend listening to one of the free EPs from Brooklyn art-punks Mindtroll. Wielding an accordion, a megaphone, and a wonderfully odd sense of humor (although singer Niina Pollari puts on her dead-serious face when they perform), Mindtroll will make you dance, laugh, and sing along to each song before you’ve even finished hearing it.

Their songs cover such varied and essential topics as the bores of having a boyfriend who’s into jazz (“Jazz boyfriend and his excruciating jazz friends!” Pollari exclaims exasperatedly), the best ice cream flavors in Fort Greene (“Cookies and cream! Vanilla and pretzel!”), and how “it is hard to be a human when you have to learn so many things!” This is true. They even have a song about prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces, which results in my favorite Mindtroll sing-along: “That’s not your boyfriend – that’s a German that looks like your boyfriend! (He looks a lot like your boyfriend!”). As you can see, their lyrics require a lot of exclamation points, just like listening them to them might require you to get up and dance spastically. Just don’t let your boss catch you.
