TRACKS OF THE WEEK – 8/11/2022

August 11. 2022 | By Wayne Jessup

Welcome back to Tracks of the Week, kicking off in Philly with the return of 2nd Grade. Following up their breakthrough Hit To Hit was not an easy ask, but their new single “Strung Out On You” sets the table for the highly anticipated Easy Listening, out 9/30 on Double Double Whammy. Moving on to Tucson, the mighty Dogbreth have unleashed ”Valley Of The Moon” from their latest LP Believe This Rain, released last week.

On to New Orleans, where Lawn bring it full circle with the hypnotic jangle of “Down”, touching base with their debut EP Big Sprout to inspire the latest LP Bigger Sprout, out now on Born Yesterday. Finishing off this week at home in the Bay Area, Maryam Qudus steps aside from tending others’ artistic visions to realize her own under the banner of Spacemoth. “Round In Loops” is a great entry point to the maddeningly catchy debut LP No Past No Future, out last month on Wax Nine/Carpark Records. The formal LP release show will be held 8/12 at Bandcamp Oakland.

Post-script: this will stand as my final Tracks of the Week; sooner or later, one needs to leave the Nest. It’s been a wild ten year ride, and I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out my mentors and co-conspirators: for Jason J. and Trina Starke and Julie Vree for taking a chance on me, April Siese, Sean Morris, and Collin Welbon for always having my back, and Mayumi Okamoto and Leslie Hampton, the braintrust. Salutes to bar-raisers Jason Martinez and Don Albonico, Ace Ubas, Alyssa Pereria, Amber Gregory, Andre Cruz, Anna Larina, Cervante Pope, Dustin Shey, Jennie Tan, Jenn Shields, Jeff Bracco and everyone else who provided a shelter from the storm. Thank you.
