PICTURE THIS: Esben And The Witch + Heliotropes @ Brick & Mortar, SF 4/4/13
It came as a whisper between sets, from a fellow front row dweller: “Oh Em Gee — there are real *goths* here!” This evidently came as a surprise to some, but the question must be asked: why not? Brighton”s Esben And The Witch, a three-piece headed by Rachel Davies, certainly channels a number of dark influences, including Siouxie And The Banshees, and their name comes from a Danish fairy tale. Have you ever
read Danish fairy tales? Pretty dark stuff.
This headlining gig at Brick &
Mortar was Esben And The Witch”s first trip to San Francisco in years, and it did not disappoint; neither did the band”s choice of opener, Brooklyn-based Heliotropes. This all-girl foursome rocked hard — drummer Cici Harrison was particularly mesmerizing to watch — and the band will be releasing their debut album this summer.
