LIVE REVIEW: London Grammar + Highasakite @ The Independent, SF 3/27/14

If you came late to San Francisco’s Independent for London Grammar, you lose! You missed a great band out of Norway called Highasakite. This quirky five piece was lead with the amazing vocals of Ingrid Helene Håvik. How many indie bands do see with a french horn? With songs like “Son of a Bitch” or the incredibly catchy “Indian Summer”, this is a band to check out. Watch for their new album Silent Treatment, out April 7th.

We were expecting a night of laid back music from London Grammar in San Francisco. Surprisingly a lot of the live versions of their music are much more upbeat and, dare I say, danceable? Dot Major, Dan Rothman, and Hannah Reid managed to rework the live show to keep songs like “Interlude” deeply moving. The ones that wrap you into this beautiful cocoon lulled by Reid’s singing. Then Reid’s voice will soar over a song like “Strong” with a much bigger drum element that make’s standing still frickin’ impossible.

It’s funny how memories are made. The way you latch on to a phrase such as “your arms curled around my waist” from a song like “Interlude”. It just so happens someone has their arms around you. They pull you just that little bit closer. Maybe you choose that moment to incircle someone. Then it happens, you two and these human beings on that stage create a memory that settles inside you. Maybe you realize it right then maybe not, but its there. The feeling of love that London Grammar has shared with you.
