LIVE REVIEW: Heaps N Heaps @ The Roxy Theater, LA 7/19/12

Gavyn Bailey opened up the night and had a blast on the stage. This young lad – he’s all of 14 – is already jumping into the melting pot of live performance and is at his best when hitting the clean, high notes of Ingrid Michaelson. Already on the road of congenial indie pop, it’s likely his “tween” fan-base will grow in the coming years.

Heaps N Heaps

Heaps N Heaps created a tight and powerful jam session, eclipsed only by their cohesive vocals. Alisa Fedele and Zach Moon of HNH perform ridiculously well together, and we’re convinced it’s because they’re opposites. Moon plays grinning, eyes closed, hopping around in an easygoing, uninhibited manner. Fidele personifies the deeper, moodier side of their sound, bending forward and turning around, feeling the words she sings, her hair a holy mess.

Their sound was infectious. The bass and electric guitar, untouched by distortion or echo, offered a powerful anchor for their sound. And with the percussion and keys added in, they had the crowd moving, stomping and bobbing. In “Please Don’t Go,” the group had onlookers singing along with every chorus, “Na na na na, na na no no no…” people were hooked.

Self-described as an indie rock version of The xx, we say their sound is so precise and wonderful they should have nothing to compare themselves to. “There is no place for me, there is no place I know,” sang Fidele and Moon, seemingly aware of that rare niche they have carved out in the music scene.
