TRACKS OF THE WEEK – 7/29/2021 Edition

July 29. 2021 | By Wayne Jessup

Welcome back to another Tracks. This time we’ll kick off with “Drink” by Destroy Boys. It’s their new single, out now on Hopeless Records, and the video features a sweet little cameo from the Silverlake Lounge. Catch them on tour as part of the Sad Summer Festival, with California dates including Sacramento on 8/6, and Anaheim on 8/7.

Few folks can boast a resume as badass as Thalia Zedek, reaching back to UziLive Skull and Come, but now marking 20 years since her solo debut Been Here and Gone, she’s steadfastly refused to be nailed to one place. “Revelation Time” finds the Thalia Zedek Band back in fighting form, with a new LP Perfect Vision due out 8/27 on Thrill Jockey, and a release show scheduled for 9/3 at her de facto home court, the Middle East in Cambridge.

We’ll close up this week with a double shot from Australia, starting in Sydney. We’ve been flying a flag for The Lazy Eyes since their debut, and are happy to report that the just-released EP2 more than measures up. “The Island” stakes firm ground in the modern psych pantheon, and it’s worth noting, despite just six songs to their name, the quality control bar is set high.

Moving on to Melbourne, it’s the return of Courtney Barnett with “Rae Street” and a video showcasing the breadth of her Courtney Barnett-ness. Things Take Time, Take Time is her new LP, out 11/12 on Milk! Records at home, and Mom + Pop in the States,  complimented with an upcoming US tour and a documentary, Anonymous Club, directed by Danny Cohen and premiering at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
