LIVE REVIEW: STRFKR & Painted Palms @ The Glass House, Pomona 1/8/12

January 10. 2012 | By Samantha Saturday

Sunday night always seems to get a bad rap as the night nobody wants to go out. That certainly wasn’t the case on Sunday at the Glass House in Pomona. Starfucker, along with support from Painted Palms, brought out a crowd eager to have one last blast before the weekend was through.

Painted Palms
Due to a press credential snafu, I heard the majority of Painted Palms’ set while standing just outside the venue. Even from the sidewalk, the trio made quite an impact on my eardrums as their electro melodies flowed out crisply into the misty air. Once inside, the air within the venue buzzed gently with impressive atmosphere. Rarely have I heard a band fill such a large space with subtleties and ambiance as well as Painted Palms.

Given the circumstances – an all ages, no booze venue on a Sunday night – the crowd was packed tightly and ready to get down and Starfucker had no problem making that happen. Clad in sweaters and hoodies, the Portland natives hardly looked like they were about to unleash a wave semi-psychedelic dance jams. The group was strictly business throughout their entire set, only pausing briefly to wish David Bowie a happy birthday. Rounding out their set with an incredible rendition of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” was the icing on the cake, sending the crowd into a bobbing tizzy. The popped-out electro vibes sent out by the lads of Starfucker were nothing short of a positive omen to start off what could otherwise be a dull week.
