PICTURE THIS: The Coup @ The Independent, SF 8/19/11

August 24. 2011 | By David Korman

Inspired Flight and Nio Tha Gift opened for The Coup at the Independent in San Francisco on 8/19. Nio rapped over some beats and Inspired Flight mixed mesmerizing beats with electronic sounds, guitar, and vocals to produce a magical soundscape to set the mood for the face melting hip-hop funk rock that The Coup emits. Lead by the talented and charismatic Boots Riley, The Coup brought a funky high energy performance to the 400-strong Friday night crowd. Brilliant solos by vocalist Silk-E and original scratch work by Pam the Funkstress on the turntables (A well endowed woman who might yell ‘look ma, no hands’ as she scratched the vinyl) kept the crowd moving in between Riley’s big smiles, pursed lips, and flows of lyrical prowess.
