Cloud Nothings + Japandroids @ The Glass House, Pomona 4/22/2013

The Glass House in Pomona, CA was recently the location for a number of Coachella acts, playing Localchella (club) shows. Following the culmination of this year”s Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Cloud Nothings came to town with Japandroids and turned a lot of heads in doing so. The lineup for this event guaranteed a fun, fast, sweaty, and loud evening. Upon entrance to the venue, it came as a surprise to see the small Glass House half empty, which could have been due to this concert falling on a Monday. Cloud Nothings begin the night”s set with “Fall In,” by tweaking the rhythm and melody of the song slightly.

Surprisingly the band appeared as a trio, instead of their usual four piece. That factor did not alter the sound at all, the band consistently participated in extended jam sessions between songs. The crowd began to warm up during “Our Plans” by swaying to the beat, some beginning to shamelessly dance and sing. Lead singer/guitarist Dylan Baldi kept mysterious throughout the set, hiding his face behind his long hair and keeping the on-stage banter to almost non-existent. He offered a, “Thanks!” before playing a new song, following it with “Stay Useless.” This song saw some new life injected into the crowd with plenty participants singing loudly while pumping fists. This same song also inspired a small mosh pit to occur, which only intensified with “Wasted Days.” The last two songs played “No Sentiment” and “No Future/No Past” saw the majority of the crowd moving, especially the latter seeing their set peak with everyone yelling “No Future! No Past!”

While Japandroids set up, it became evident who the majority of the crowd was there to see. And it was for good reason as Japandroids played so confidently and precise. Brian King (lead singer/guitarist) started by thanking everyone for “coming out on a Monday night” and also explaing how it was the last show of a “very, very, very, very long tour.” He encouraged the crowd to help them “leave it all on stage,” before going into “Adrenaline Nightshift.” The band played so effortlessly through their set, never letting a dull moment set in. Their set hit a high note during “Young Hearts Spark Fire” and “The House That Heaven Built.” This night was a perfect dose of energy to help everyone conquer the week ahead of them.
