HEAR THIS: The Echo-Friendly

July 07. 2011 | By Mike Sabino

The Echo-Friendly released their first single, “Same Mistakes” June 28th. Brooklyn leader-singers Jake Rabinbach (Jump Back Jake) and Shannon Esper, join Jake Vest and Greg Faison from Memphis, where they record. This incarnation takes a turn from Jump Back Jake and The Echo-Friendly’s more country influenced sound. Their name suits, as natural touches reverberate off dense city distortion. Jake Rabinback and Shannon nakedly spill their on-and-off relationship woes into music. It’s a simple repetitive guitar floating under Jake’s deep breathy confession. Shannon joins, sounding just like honey. Voices counter before joining, against the band’s distorted yet earthy textural build, recalling The The’s “Kingdom of Rain” with Sinead O’Connor, Hope Sandoval with Jesus and Mary Chain, or Iggy Pop’s “Candy” with Kate Pierson – duets I wished were actual bands.
