HEAR THIS: The Buttercream Gang

June 23. 2011 | By Sharon Payne

This dynamic trio from San Francisco/Napa area of California creates great indie pop in the same vein as Vampire Weekend with fun vocal arrangements and well-placed global rhythms. The Buttercream Gang’s newest release, Polite Men [Pitted Records] incorporates African beats, great harmonies, and a plethora of musical styles to create a fun and dancey collection of new-favorites. This is the band’s second full length release and is a slight departure from the group’s earlier punk/rock style.

The multi-instrumentalists, Pete Davies, Bobby Renz, and Robinson Kuntz are clearly not afraid to experiment with different musical genres, as heard in “Walk By,” which is a blend of elements of classic soul, dub, and a fun Latin bass-line. Polite Men is definitely a great addition to a summer soundtrack or eclectic collection.
