HEAR THIS: Stranger Day

August 02. 2011 | By April

Southern rapper Stranger Day is anything but your typical crunkster. Drawing from EMYND and DJA as producers of his first collection of songs, Bar Stool Bounce, Stranger Day combines lush and varied soundscapes with determined, rolling rhymes that build up to insatiable hooks. The track “Moonwalking on the Sun” takes the opening guitar riff of The Clash’s “London Calling” and adds a few hand claps for syncopation’s sake to turn the song into a head-nodding ode to Stranger Day’s southern rap peers, and synth eventually taking over in the chorus. With each track, it’s a grab bag of genres backing one impressive rapper.
