HEAR THIS: SASAMI

March 13. 2019 | By Wayne Jessup

Last fall we at the Nest were foaming at the mouth over Sasami’s debut single “Not The Time/Callous”, (TOTW 10/11/18), and now we’re happy to report that her self-titled debut LP is out March 8th on Domino Records. It’s been a journey for LA’s Sasami Ashworth, and you might remember her from Cherry Glazer, touring with King Tuff, producing Soko, or various arrangements she’s whipped up in the studio. Suffice it to say, the Eastman School of Music grad has paid her dues, and the LP reflects the tapestry of her experiences.
The single was the obvious calling card, but the deeper you go, the more is revealed, and the emotional friction of the searching lyrics versus the absolute confidence of the music lures you in. “Jealousy” builds a dreamgaze wall of sound, peppered with Stereolab-worthy hooks, but it’s “Free” (w Devendra Banhart), that’s the absolute jaw dropper, an acid ballad that could comfortably sit in Aimee Mann’s songbook.  Currently doing dates in Europe, before a SXSW appearance, she’lll be back on the West Coast for April dates, including the Echo (LA) on 4/3, and the Rickshaw Stop (SF) on 4/9, before carrying on across the country, including May’s FORM in Acrosanti, AZ.
Unsung LA MVP Sasami @sasamiashworth makes the solo move with her entrancing self-titled debut LP, out 3/8 on @Dominorecordco
