It’s an easy thing, especially in the current political cycle, to have your default setting permanently stuck on cynicism, and sometimes it takes a gentle reminder that there really is a point to continuing the fight. Here at the Nest, we’re proud to premiere “Habitual,” the new single from San Francisco quartet The Go Ahead. The Go Ahead, (formerly Jesus and the Rabbis), consists of Kyna Wise, Alex Mamelok, Josh Hertz and Chris Kelly. Neither ballad nor blowout, the slow burn of “Habitual” is an ode to hard-earned hope, underpinned by a relentless bass line, keeping things in check until the ascension of the chorus.

The Go Ahead discuss the genesis of “Habitual” as, “a bit of a New Year’s surprise. Josh and Kyna woke up on New Year’s Day after a night of celebrating with buddies. Kyna brought up that she had been working on some lyrics that were consuming her thoughts. Josh, serendipitously, had been revisiting a riff of his that he always wanted to finish. He started playing the riff and all the rest of the words Kyna needed surged to her. The two of them sat down in a room full of tired family friends, all lying down in different spaces on the floor, couches, and chairs. They silently watched as the two of them created what would be a soul searching ballad of desperation and hope for self love and care.”

“Habitual” is a solid step forward from their debut EP CyclesWednesday, June 8th is your chance to catch them live at Brick & Mortar in San Francisco.
