DITTIES FROM DOWN UNDER: Dappled Cities

September 28. 2012 | By Augustus Welby

Dappled Cities‘ fourth LP Lake Air displays a clear evolution in the band’s songwriting. It is more concise as well as more spacious than the Sydney band’s previous releases. Dave Rennick’s refrain “we’ve taken this long so why so starry eyed?” on first single “Run With The Wind,” summarizes the songwriting progression evident on Lake Air. The band are talking directly to you and grabbing your attention by focusing on the imperative of the present. Lake Air sounds assured, competent, and carefree. It’s not necessary to find outside reference points to describe the sound of this album — Dappled Cities occupy a fascinating category of their own.
