LIVE REVIEW: Phono Del Sol, San Francisco 7/11/15

It was one of those perfect summer days in San Francisco. Yes, those exist —and if you’d been at Phono Del Sol yesterday, you’d know exactly what that looks like. Phono Del Sol — an annual summer music festival put on by The Bay Bridged, Tiny Telephone recording studio and DoTheBay — hypes itself as a laid back, indie, local alternative to blockbuster festivals like Outside Lands. And at those things, this festival succeeds wildly. It was a relaxed day of good music at Potrero Del Sol park, and that atmosphere was a welcome relief from “festival wear” and Goldenvoice festival lineups and $500 ticket prices.

We’ll go ahead and get this out of the way now: obviously the best part of the day was the festival’s headliner, Tanlines, and they were excellent as always. But aside from that great closing set, there were so many others to enjoy at Phono Del Sol: from local favorites Sonny and the Sunsets to Heartwatch (fka The Tropics) to further-flung bands like Generationals (who attracted a fervent crowd!) to the relatively unknown Vérité with her absolutely gorgeous voice — there was something for everyone at Phono del Sol, and if you didn’t like a particular band, you could picnic on the grass, explore food trucks or sit on a bench and enjoy the atmosphere.

It was a great afternoon, topped by a sublime performance by Tanlines. What more could you want? Looking forward to next year’s party in the park.
