LIVE REVIEW: Blonde Redhead, The Luyas @ The Independent 6/30/11
Admittedly, I am a new fan of Blonde Redhead. Yes, yes, I know- eff me, right? Luckily I had the rare opportunity via The Owl Mag to see them at The Independent and I was not disappointed. The trio was as cool as a breeze, backed by incredible lights of electric blue and soft pink. For slower songs, Edison-era ligthtbulbs strategically placed around the instruments and mic stands flickered and glowed a nostalgic gold, setting an intimate and subtly controlling tone to the set. Practiced professionals, they delivered each highly anticipated note perfectly, much to the delight of the riveted crowd which filled the venue to the seams. Makino was seductive, breathy perfection especially when delivering unscripted eagle cries during the encore. Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace kept each song a fluid ride into the next, smiling quietly all the while. True to form, there was not much conversation, but they thanked the crowd a number of times for coming out. All in all, the show secured Blonde Redhead as an established, beloved group who know exactly how to present themselves as rock stars; aloof yet accessible, supremely talented while staying humble, and having a classic independent sound which is aging like a fine wine.
