Sleepy Kitty‘s duo of Paige Brubeck (vocals, guitar, keyboard) and Evan Sult (drums, vocals, tapes) have got it all figured out on Projection Room; Brubeck talks of how it “feels like [music] compositions for Sleepy Kitty, versus songs that Sleepy Kitty does.” Projection Room is the second album from St. Louis’ favorite adopted band with the layered vocals, outstanding harmonies, and use of field tapes remaining mainstays.

The single of “Hold Yr Ground” takes a clear eyed look at urban St. Louis issues: “to whoever stole the Dodge caravan/on June 11, 2010/ I hope that you graduated high school/and you’re not doing 12th grade again” is how the song begins, but it builds hope for the future in the remaining lines amidst the guitar riffs extolling Cherokee Street.

“The Hoax” sounds like a girl group b-side, complete with love lorn lyrics and swooping oos and aaahs in the background, with an edgy guitar snaking through. We couldn’t stop singing along.

This album exemplifies what independent music should be (they even reference Godard!) a questioning of what they can do with their song narrative and how they can jump to that next level-just the two of them on the stage, loopin’ it up. We can hardly wait for their tour stop in our city.
