The release of Stockholm-based I Break Horses’ debut album with Bella Union is almost upon us and what better time to check out this enchanting duo. Signed to the same label as Explosions in the Sky, singer Maria Lindén and partner Fredrik Balck are similar in their approach, densely packing rolling bass with minimalist drums and lush synth to form a cohesive mix of shoegaze ambience with hints of electronica along the way. The album’s first single and title song, “Hearts” starts with a driving beat, warming up to singer Maria Lindén coaxing even more out of the song. Lindén’s breathy vocals melt into a collage of alternating drums, pedaling bass, and fuzzed-out synth that make them more than just a one-trick pony.
