YOU GOTTA SEE THIS: “Hanging On” by Active Child
Several artists so far this decade have exhibited folk sensibilities without an over-reliance on accouterments like acoustic guitars or lyrics about freezing to death in the mountain river. Active Child is on this list, adorning traditional song structures with unconventional (for now) methods like processed beats and neo-soul vocal phrasing. When paired with the visuals, “Hanging On” brokers a peace agreement between the natural and the manufactured. Sure, he’s catching fish the quasi-old fashioned way, but he’s probably going to drive home in a hybrid listening to this song on MP3 if, of course, he doesn’t freeze to death in the mountain river.
