LIVE REVIEW: Coachella 2011

IMG_5231-ed

This past weekend, a few shy of 80,000 people took the pilgrimage to Indio for Coachella. With the Tecate for breakfast and the intense heat, you probably missed something. Here’s the Coachella Class of 2011 rundown.

King of Coachella: Kanye West

From ballerinas to big white sheets to extreme lifts to pyrotechnics, Kanye West’s closing set was more like an art piece than anything. A clear homage to ancient greek mythology, the twenty-seven song long performance panned out much like an astronomical tragic saga. Running the gamut of his discography, every single song proved for forceful than the previous. Rumors spread throughout the day of possible guest appearances, but the set would have been distorted if Katy Perry or Rihanna had added their vocals. Keeping it simple, Pusha T came to aid during “Runaway” while Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon had the time of his life being feature on several songs, stand out being “Monster.” Kanye’s overblown ego seemed to shrink in an instant when he tearfully stated that Coachella is the “most important show since his mom passed” and expressing appreciation for his fans supporting him. Closing the set with “Power” there was no need for an encore to follow. Kanye West is truly one of our generation’s greatest performers and his passion for what he does seeps through every musical effort he makes.

Best impersonation of an 8 year old: Ariel Pink

Ariel Pink stomped off of stage exclaiming “We’re not playing anymore songs” to the bewilderment of the rest of Haunted Graffiti. Momentarily he re-emerged to finish the set? No. To roll around, smoke clove cigarettes, and pout on stage while the rest of the band tried to salvage their performance. Ending with an insincere “Sorry, I know you hate me now” before again walking off stage, Ariel Pink pulled a tantrum that is most comparable to when an 8 year old doesn’t get what they wanted for their birthday.

Weirdest celebrity sighting: David Hasselhoff dancing during Duran Duran’s set

Biggest Let Down: The Strokes

There’s no denying the iconic presence The Strokes have over millennial music, however they’ve seemingly had a steady decline in their live performance over the course of their fame. Going through your typical set list of songs like “Last Night” and “Reptilia” there was no spark that made it any more magical than sitting in your bedroom listening to the tracks from your alarm clock radio, “Juicebox” however proved to be satisfying pulsating. Julian Casablancas fell flat during songs and in between them with murmured lyrics and jaded snarks. New material from Angles couldn’t meet their overproduced standards and fell short compared to the past hits. Even throughout their lackluster set, The Strokes did manage to keep the crowd pleased.

Hometown Heroes: The Morning Benders

There’s something so fascinating as seeing a band from your city grow into success. Chris Chu emanated his usual charm that makes you instantly fall in love and the entire band commanded the stage with vigor that I’d never seen before from them. Thoroughly beholden to their audience, they finished with “Excuses” with the audience sharing in the walloping harmonies. The Morning Benders have made the entire bay area local music scene extremely proud.

Best On Stage Fashion: PJ Harvey’s victorian style dress with black plumed headdress & DFA 1979 accessorizing with facial hair.

IMG_6322-ed

The Foreign Exchange Band: Yelle

“This is the same word in English and in French — do you want to dance?” Yelle proved that dance music translates across any international barrier. Front woman Julie Budet doe eyed with thick eyelashes, danced around charismatically in a red cheetah print jump suit belting out an even mixture of songs from debut album Pop Up as well as their recent, Safari Disco Club.

Worst Use of Lighting: Bright Eyes

The elaborate light show accompanying Bright Eyes’ set distracted from the music, do you really need pulsating lights when watching Conor Oberst brood to “Road to Joy” ?

IMG_5411-ed

Best Frontman: Brett Anderson of (The London) Suede

As an iconic piece of music history, Brett Anderson flails about on stage all while maintaining a raw, honest vocals. Belting out songs like “Animal Nitrate” and “The Drowners” Brett Anderson proved that Suede is one of the most phenomenal pieces from alternative music.

IMG_6323-ed

Best Set You Probably Missed: Monarchy

While most of the fest’s attendance were watching Alice Glass hobble around screaming during Crystal Castles set, a wise few hundred decided to go with european band Monarchy. The band, fully clad in black suits and white masks played enigmatic dark-synthpop underneath a dark shroud of purple lights.

IMG_6317-ed

Best Desert Bromance: Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Kanye West

Best Attempt to Cross Over: Wiz Khalifa

Wiz Khalifa who’s recently been dubbed as one of the “softest rappers in the game” by Ghostface Killah, and has come down under the mallet of harsh critics with the recent release of Rolling Papers, gained credibility with the “too hip for this” crowd when he broke out into “The Thrill” which consists of Wiz rapping over Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream.” This attempt to gain new indie fans would probably have gone over ten times better if Empire of the Sun had actually joined him on stage, but it was still relatively effective.

IMG_6316-ed

Best Non-Music Feature: Jonathan Glazer / Spiritualized Installation

Best Sing-a-long Moment: “Mr. Brightside”

The now solo Brandon Flowers brought out past Killers band mates, Dave Keuning and Mark Stoermer to join him during “Mr. Brightside”. Thousands of people reminisced over the Grammy nominated single off Hot Fuss, and for that very moment it was 2004 all over again.

Worst Audience: Animal Collective

Overzealous hipsters who don’t “get” the new tracks and pouted when the band never got around to playing “My Girls” and tweens with neon face paint and feathers in their hair passing out on top of each other because it’s their first time doing drugs and they don’t have enough cash to pay for $5 water.

LIVE REVIEW: The Morning Benders @ The Black Cat, DC 11/12

Morning Benders, Twin Sister, Oberhofer Sold Out sign

People crammed inside the Black Cat bar-cum-concert venue for the night’s sold out event. The show opened with Oberhofer, whose body flailing insanity was tempered by waves of ‘ooohing’ and a sound one can only describe as “scchkking.” In fact much of what Oberhofer does is indescribable, but for those grappling with a sound-a-like the best is a Frankenstein creation of The Dodos, Spoon, MGMT and Beach Fossils. Songs such as “Away FRM U” and “OoOoOo” were crowd-pleasers along with the Bert and Ernie stickers he had taped to his guitar, one that he somehow plays sans pick.

Oberhofer

When Andrea Estella took the stage her deceivingly normal sweater and skinny black jeans could not suppress her ethereal nature, and onlookers gazed and eagerly swayed along to her Cocteau-by-way-of Bjork vocals. Twin Sister, however, is very much a band and not simply a one-woman show. Their success lies in the fluidity of their members, from Dev Gupta’s earnest keyboarding to the soulful vocals and guitar plucks of Eric Cardona. Songs like “I Want a House” showcased their dream-pop sound, and “Milk & Honey” was one of the night’s best offerings.

Andrea Estella, Twin Sister

When the first few notes of their hit “Excuses” began to play and from the shadows the Morning Benders emerged, the crowd went wild. Speaking against shrieks, lead singer Chris Chu announced, “We have this new record Big Echo and we’d like to play it for you tonight if that’s okay.” Despite the risk, the Morning Benders easily lured in the audience with their first three songs, “Wet Cement,” “Mason Jar” and ‘Boarded Doors,” the last track taken off their first album Talking Through Tin Cans. Oh Chris Chu, you sneaky little devil. And while a few tricks were thrown in, the set was composed of what the Benders do best: solid sunny indie-rock done in way that gives the ubiquitous term some meaning.

However, the pinnacle of the night came with the closing anthem “Excuses.” When Chu pressed his lips to the microphone and began, “I’ll tape my tongue to the southern tip of your body,” roughly 37 girls fainted. Luckily they had the crowd, pulsing with momentum, to push them back up again. They likely arose just in time to see Chu jump off the stage into the audience, at which point they promptly fainted again.

When Chu returned to the stage, there was a surprise that neither the audience, nor the band seemingly expected. Both Oberhofer and Twin Sister came up behind the Bender quartet and joined them on stage. The swaying, dancing and some wonderfully Fresh Prince-esque dance moves from Andrea Estella made the song feel like one big group hug.

When the lights went up, and people detached from their embraces, a pretty, doe-eyed girl remarked, “The Morning Benders are simply great.” And she was right. They are great in the way that makes even DC curmudgeons participate in doo-wop sing-alongs; great in the way that when the Brothers Chu strum the first chords of “Virgins” it makes you feel vulnerable every time in the same way you did your first time; great in the way that despite all the world’s noise and chatter, songs like ‘Excuses” can make one believe that things are going to turn out okay. And so for that, Morning Benders, we gratefully salute you.

Twin Sister

FROM THE NEWS NEST: Morning Benders, Sea Wolf tribute Bob Dylan and more.

We always love when musicians that we love pay tribute to musicians that they love! The Morning Benders, Sea Wolf (pictured) and Peter Morén from Peter Bjorn and John have joined several other artists to cover the entirety of Bob Dylan‘s 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home. Subterranean Home Sick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home drops Oct. 5.

Amy Winehouse must have figured out that it’s bad to burn to bridges, especially when she hasn’t got a crazy amount left. Last week Winehouse took to her Twitter to let producer Mark Ronson know that he was dead to her for taking half the credit for her hit album Back to Black. Yesterday she was apologizing: “ronson i love you; that make it better? you knoww i love you- it’s a jew thingz.”

Earlier this weekend Bruno Mars, up-and-coming R&B singer as well as the voice on Travis McCoy‘s hit “Billionaire,” was arrested on suspicion of cocaine possession in Las Vegas. Well, that’s one way to get PR when you’re about to drop your debut album. (Sure, we’re cynics.)

FROM THE NEWS NEST: Morning Benders release new video and more.

Even though Chris Chu didn’t win our “Best in Show” contest for May, we’re still mighty in love with the Morning Benders (pictured) frontman. And happily, the Berkeley band keeps feeding the fires of our love with a newly released video for their song “All Day Day Light” directed by Jack Ferry. We dig the big, bold aesthetic, and the kind-of-closed-captioning, because we always like some good lyrics.

Say what you want about Lady Gaga, she’s one smart and entertaining performer. And nothing’s smarter or more awesome than bringing the Scissor Sisters on board for the next leg of her Monster Ball tour, which begins next year. They’re going to tear up the U.S., for sure.

Finally, rapper T.I., recently on probation after a 10-month stretch in prison for gun charges, was arrested with his wife last night for possession of a controlled substance. The couple were released this morning on bail, but this definitely doesn’t look good for the rapper.

FROM THE NEWS NEST: Morning Benders announce European tour and more.

The morning benders (pictured) having been touring like mad men since dropping their most recent album Big Echo in March, and the fall doesn’t see them slowing. The band announced today that they will be embarking on a three-week headlining tour of Europe. Local fans of the Berkeley rockers, don’t be jealous: the boys will be stopping at The Fillmore Oct. 16.

It’s too bad Beyonce is all married to Jay-Z, considering Forbes has the man topping the list of Hip-Hop’s Cash Kings. Well, he’s also talented and pretty hot, but that’s all besides the fact that Jay-Z raked in $63 million over the past 12 months.

Finally, a departure from our usual news-making musicians, check out the super-adorbs Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who won our hearts in the recent blockbuster Inception as well as the indie flick (500) Days of Summer, singing a cover of the Aretha Franklin hit “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” The boy’s got skills!

FROM THE NEWS NEST: Morning Benders offer free ‘Cold War’ remix and more.

We love new tunes just as much as the next kid. Especially free new tunes. And especially from the Morning Benders (pictured). We can’t get enough of their fuzzy indie pop. Check out the band’s website for an exclusive download of their track “Cold War (Remix).” Also, pick up the latest issue of Rolling Stone for a feature on the Morning Benders, one of our favorite local bands.

God, Arcade Fire knows how to keep us going hot and heavy. Just last week, their latest single sneaked its way into circulation, then they’ve revealed they an album is dropping in the fall and now Arcade Fire has announced that they are headlining their first U.S. tour since 2007! Huzzah! Too bad they haven’t announced any local dates. We can just keep hoping, right?

Ever since Conan O’Brien got the boot from his day/night job, his cool-meter just seems to continue to rise. While on his tour “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television,” O’Brien was joined on stage Tuesday night in NYC by none other than Vampire Weekend. O’Brien played rhythm guitar during a performance of “Walcott.”

Eric Victorino Crowned May’s Best in Show

Our first Bay Area-based Best in Show hunk off between Eric Victorino, Koley O’Brien, and Chris Chu has come to the end and the last dreamboat standing is heart-melter Victorino. It wasn’t a landslide, Koley fanatics made a push at the end. Of course, we wouldn’t kick any of them out of the green room (wink, wink) for eating crackers. The winner gets decked out in Tankfarm tees!

Thanks for voting and stay tuned for next week’s Best in Show announcement for June…

The final tally was this:

Eric Victorino: 165
Koley O’Brien: 111
Chris Chu: 33

LIVE REVIEW: Broken Bells, The Morning Benders @ The Regency Ballroom 5/22/2010

Dear Owl Mag,

Have you ever started dating someone new who’s totally fun and cool but you’re still feeling it out? And then one night you hang out with him and his friends and as the night goes on you realize that you’re more into one of his friends than him? You’ve been there right?  I think I had that night on Friday. I went to the Regency Ballroom ready for Broken Bells to blow my mind but in the end, I left thinking about the Morning Benders. Yeah, yeah…maybe I’m a music slut with commitment issues but what can I say…you can’t control your heart.

Maybe I was too excited, but I wasn’t the only one. When Broken Bells walked onstage, the whole crowd’s excitement was palpable. After a much buzzed about collaboration, followed by a much loved album, leading to a much anticipated tour, you could feel a “hell yeah” in the sold-out show air.  With several other musicians accompanying them, and a video projection in the background, you knew that Danger Mouse and James Mercer were going to bring it. You knew that they were going to take the tracks from their album and give them a live interpretation that would be so ridiculous that just talking about the show to friends would give you a music street cred that would last at least until Bonnaroo.

But alas this was not the case. Don’t get me wrong; their performance wasn’t bad by any means. Mercer’s voice made you feel privileged to be in his presence and Danger Mouse was perfection on every instrument he touched. But I just wanted more. With the skills of these two, I imagined a concoction of vocals, beats, and sounds that would be mixed in such a way that you would leave the show feeling like someone put something in your drink. But they didn’t vary too much from the album. They did perform a pretty rad cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover” that indeed left you with a ‘beautiful feeling,’ but that was kinda it. Broken Bells gave a really solid performance, but I hope next time they take it up to the notch I know they can.

However, the performance I will be tweeting about is The Morning Benders’. They turned out a show that took me by surprise. In the past year, the loved local band has gained well deserved national acclaim after touring with the likes of Grizzly Bear and releasing their latest album Big Echo. While watching them play Friday night, you could see subtleties in their performance that illuminated the grounds for their rise. Their down tempo version of “Dammit Anna” gave the song an unexpected melancholy tone that added a direction and depth that was a nice change of pace for the upbeat song. And as Chris Chu and the band ended their set with “Excuses,” the audience swayed and sang along to the soft and sweet tune in a way that turned the grand Regency Ballroom into a comfy, intimate space. The Morning Benders definitely had a presence that drew you in and their understated ending had me lingering for more. I guess what they say is right; it’s the quiet ones that you have to watch out for.

FROM THE NEWS NEST: Broken Bells taps Morning Benders for tour and more.

Broken Bells, the hot new band featuring Danger Mouse and Shins frontman James Mercer, has announced their first full tour, and San Francisco’s own Morning Benders (pictured) has been selected to open for them. The boys of Morning Benders are currently on the road touring but will join Broken Bells in San Diego May 18. The tour will stop in San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom May 21.

One of the most iconic songs of the 2000s almost wasn’t: the White Stripes‘ “Seven Nation Army” was initially rejected by their labels as a single. Jack White recently told XFM presenter Steve Harris, “It’s a compelling idea, thinking about singles. Nobody knows. Record labels don’t know, artists don’t really know most of the time. I can think back to when ‘Elephant’ came out I wanted to put ‘Seven Nation Army’ out as a single. The label in England and the label in America both didn’t want to.”

We like Canadian duo Tegan & Sara‘s recent single “Alligator,” true story. It’s super effin’ cute. The gals are releasing a digital album of 17 remixes of the tune, which we find a little excessive, but check out this sweet remix by Toro y Moi. It’s the perfect amount cool added to Tegan & Sara’s quirk.
