Over more than a decade, Chicago’s Alkaline Trio has carved out a niche for itself in the punk scene with songs that are catchy but not trite, macabre but not goth, and girl-centric but not emo.
It’s usually not a good idea for a long-running band to hail its new album as a return to form, especially when the claim involves phrases like “punk rock roots.” This Addiction is best appreciated on its own merits, rather than in comparison with your old favorite Alkaline Trio album.
Sure the obvious acts like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metric dominated Live 105’s BFD at the Shoreline on Saturday with an unprecedented amount of drunk teeny boppers bouncing up and down like kids on Christmas, but when all was said and done, one of the festival’s four stages completely blew the crowd away.
