SoCal Report: SXSW Style – Dead Sara

March 16. 2011 | By Trina N. Green

As a girl and a music lover, I suffer the pangs of having to bear and wade through the plethora of women in music who do nothing for me in the vein of rock. Female-fronted bands that do more than portray harmless and pretty (and actually make good music) or come off as attempted acts of bad ass (The Dead Weather, anyone?) are scarce to my ears, so damn, Dead Sara is a gift of epic proportions.

Siouxsie Medley (guitar) and Emily Armstrong (vox, guitar) front Dead Sara; Chris Null (bass) and Sean Friday (drums) now round it out. What we have here is a band that sounds hungry and fearless, passionate and talented, and full of promise. With a voice of an angel that can morph into channeling the best of Cobain and Joplin upon command, Armstrong blows the roof off of any expectations with her intensity and, sometimes, manic performances. Dead Sara crafts anthemic, yet fierce, rock songs of personal struggle carried by Medley’s skillful guitar work. This is a band to watch and one that makes me proud of my XX chromosomes.

SXSW bound… yes, they are.
