FROM ACROSS THE POND: Charlotte Carpenter

September 27. 2012 | By Amanda Penlington

Charlotte Carpenter hails from the UK’s East Midlands region and is one of the rising stars of the indie folk scene. This singer-songwriter’s distinctive voice immediately captures the imagination and is reminiscent of fellow Brit Ellie Goulding. Carpenter’s writing is focused on personal experience and its primary instrument is her acoustic guitar. Nevertheless, on her new EP Let It Go, pounding drums, finger-picked banjo and a steel pedal are also featured. Whilst the title track is plaintive, “Love Songs” is an infectious pop-folk song about youthful heartbreak. The rest of the collection demonstrates a variety of arrangements and showcases that ear-catching voice. Carpenter is definitely one to watch.
