The immediate chill took us by surprise when we stepped out of the Blue Lamp around midnight on Saturday because for the last three hours we were soaking in the sunny vibes of 3 killer bands and had completely forgot it was still winter.

Warming up the audience, Sacramento local band Honyock (which according to brothers and bandmates Spencer & Mason was a term their grandfather used to call them when they were up to no good) displayed their talents in a tremendous burst of energy making use of every inch of the tiny stage.

When Terry Malts took the stage, we were expecting the crowd to became quite a bit rowdier, however even with the fuzzy guitar riffs and crashing drums, singer Phil Benson’s coherent and steadfast vocals kept the crowd blissfully in their place making it feel less like a basement punk show and more like an awesome house party.

We happened to see Surfer Blood perform at this very same venue back in 2013 and still remember the energy pouring out into the crowd as they played all the hits off of both Astro Coast and Python. Since then, guitarist Thomas Fekete tragically passed away from a rare form of cancer after a hard fought battle. It was hard to not feel a bit of sadness right before the “new band” took the stage. However with the opening chords, a glowing energy let the crowd know the band was doing alright which made the crowd feel similarly alright as we continued to relive that same excitement we felt 5 years ago with a brand new set of songs and creating some great new memories.
