Youngblood Hawke + The Mowglis @ Troubadour, LA 3/7/13

March 11. 2013 | By Vicki Dolenga

Could there be a more perfect opener for Youngblood Hawke? The Mowglis started by burning sage before they even took to the stage, then once they did, they began with some meditative “ooommmms.” But after the new age beginning, The Mowglis got down to the music. Their upbeat songs with beautiful vocal harmonies, plus the use of tambourines and acoustic guitars fit the Troubadour’s rustic, log-cabin-like décor so well that we felt like we’d been

transported to a camp sing along in the woods. After this show, they were heading out on their own headlining tour, so look for them in your city soon!

Youngblood Hawke took to the stage a short time later, starting “Rootless” off with lead singer Sam Martin and backup singer Alice Katz banging energetically on drums. This happy-go-lucky song led into a new song, “Danny Boy,” that will no doubt be on their upcoming full-length album, Wake Up, which drops on April 30th. But if you’re thinking their “Danny Boy” is a cover of the well-known Irish ballad, think again – it’s another example of the sunny, optimistic music the band is quickly becoming known for.

They slowed things down a little with the beginning of another new song, “Dreams,” and then really seemed to hit their stride with “Stars,” a song that really showcases their vocal harmonies live. The next four songs were all new and should be on the new album because they were fantastic, particularly “Protect Yourself,” which had a funky sound that isn’t found on many other songs. Then came their hit, “We Come Running,” which had the sold-out crowd singing, bouncing, and dancing vivaciously. After a brief break, the band returned to do an encore of another fun song off their EP, Forever, and ended the night with another new one, “Glacier.” Youngblood Hawke are just beginning their headlining tour across the US, so if you want to see a fun show full of spirited songs and gorgeous harmonies and melodies, we highly recommend you get out to see them!
