FREE TICKETS: Memory Tapes, Painted Palms @ Slim’s, 7/21/11

Sometimes it’s all about the little guys, the underdogs, the newbies, the up-and-comers. Sure, we’ve got a thing for Memory Tapes and his dreamy remixes, synth trances, and upbeat rhythms, but in this case, we’re particularly infatuated with Painted Palms.

Cousins Reese Donohue and Christopher Prudhomme exchanged tracks back and forth between the Bay Area and Louisiana for months before completing Canopy (their debut EP). Not long after, of Montreal‘s Kevin Barnes asked them to be main support for their 26-date North American tour…because they’re that good. The duo expands to a five-piece band for live shows, but as Secretly Canadian puts it, “echoes of Brill Building pop, buoyant electronics, and encompassing textural experimentation, the EP exudes something ebullient as well as meditative. Canopy is a modern psych-pop collage with an affinity for fluidity and the exotic.” And quite honestly, that shouldn’t be missed. Tell us which exotic location you’d like to hang under a canopy at and do it in the comments for your chance to win a pair of tickets to the show at Slim’s on 7/21/11.
