HEAR THIS: Cub Sport

Cub Sport

“Words change everything / You changed everything with words” says Cub Sport, treating words the way pacifists treat weapons. The Brisbane band don’t retreat to a corner when faced with problems. They actually welcome the occasional tussles in order to afford intimacy (“Come On Mess Me Up”). Their tone is mostly light, with a bass and electronic presence similar to New Order (“I’m On Fire”). What’s striking about their indie pop is how it can manage to be scared but not defeated, haunting but not dark. Where one track could feel retro in its instrumentation (“I Can’t Save You”), another tune might be buried under its lyrical distress (“Only Friend”). Their debut record This Is Our Vice is out now.
