READ THIS: AMY RIGBY

November 06. 2019 | By Wayne Jessup

Fall is blessing us with an abundance of music bios, and while the big names are justifiably commanding the headlines, don’t overlook the dark horse. Amy Rigby’s Girl To City is a tale well told, of the artist’s flight from Pittsburgh to late 70’s/early 80’s NYC. The crux of the story is the ground level battle of integrating art into the life and carving out that precarious path of survival. From art school to booking shows to eventually forming bands, (Last Roundup/Shams), it’s a valentine to Rigby’s NYC years. While there are cameos from names you’ll recognize, the beating heart of the book is found in the portrayals of Rigby’s family and friends.

This part of the ride culminates with the release of her first solo LP Diary of a Mod Housewife, and the rest, as they say, is history, and we’re already looking forward to continuing on in her company for part two. Amy Rigby is hitting the road to support Girl To City with a fall tour featuring readings + songs. In addition to the book, she’ll have available a new collection of demos, A One-Way Ticket To My Life, tailored for the memoir. Catch her at the Starline Social Club, Oakland on 11/7. Down in LA, there’s two opportunities: a house show on 11/9, and an appearance at Stories on 11/12.
