TRACKS OF THE WEEK – 4/18/19 Edition

April 18. 2019 | By Wayne Jessup

This week we’ll kick off by welcoming the return of Black Belt Eagle Scout (Katherine Paul). The new single “Loss & Relax”, due 4/26 on Saddle Creek, is a masterful study in tension & release; when she finally unleashes her solo at the three minute mark, it’s a dam giving way. Catch them this summer, touring with Julia Jacklin, including dates at the Swedish American Music Hall (SF) on 5/21, the Roxy (LA) 5/22, and the Teragram Ballroom (LA) 5/23.

Next up, Palehound follows up 2017’s A Place I’ll Always Go with a brand new LP, Black Friday, out 6/7 on Polyvinyl. The heartbreaking “Aaron” is our feature track. Bust out that calendar now, and plan ahead for their Fillmore date on 10/28, since they’re on the road with none other than Big Thief! It was at Palehound’s first LA appearance three years ago that we first were blown away by local opener Ramonda Hammer, and not only are we happy to report that they’re still at it, but June will bring their debut full-length, I Never Wanted Company, on New Professor Music. “Hoax” captures the fire, and leaves us wanting more.

Closing out back home with two of our favorite things from Oakland: COMPLTR resurfaces with the Rogue EP (out 4/19). Jeff Wright continues his hot streak with “Fare Jumper”. Catch COMPLTR live 4/26 at Rock & Roll Pizza in Camarillo, 4/27 All Star Lanes, Eagle Rock, and 5/18 at the Octopus Literary Salon in Oakland. Our final cut this week is “Thousands”, the closing epic from Club Night’s new LP What Life, out now on Tiny Engines.
