HEAR THIS: White Blush

White blush 5

Los Angeles’s newest addition to the synth-pop/shoegaze scene is Carol Rhyu’s solo project, White Blush. On first listen it’s easy to draw comparisons to bands like Cold Cave, Slowdive, and Cocteau Twins, but Rhyu takes her craft to the next level. Her ethereal vocals a-la Julee Cruise perfectly complement the sparsely arranged pop songs, and Rhyu creates a sound all her own. The standout tracks on the White Blush EP include “Jolene” and “True Luv.” Rhyu recently released a new song on Soundcloud called “Mysterieux,” a song she says “reminds her of kindergarten.” LA locals can see White Blush opening for February’s Monday night resident Mystery Skulls on February 18th at the Bootleg Bar (admission is free).
