HEAR THIS: Gray Young
The post-rock genre is a peculiar genre. Bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Rós, and Mogwai are typically associated with it, while others are typically overlooked. Enter, North Carolina trio Gray Young. Their recently released third album, Bonfire, is proof that they have the potential to break casino out from the typical conventions of post-rock and craft their own unique brand. The songs are brief, jumping straight into the climax without the slow build-ups. And Chas McKeown’s reverb-ladened vocals are mixed into the instrumentation rather than at the forefront to create a dense atmosphere throughout
the album. The result is the band’s hazy, no-nonsense approach to rock music that’s sure to keep listeners on their toes.
