The Get Up Kids @ The Troubadour 1/27/11

With the neon-blue Troubadour sign hanging from behind them, The Get Up Kids rocked a show of epic roller-coaster proportions for just over 90 minutes to a sold-out audience last Thursday night. On tour to promote their latest album, There Are Rules (Quality Hill Records), the band kicked off their set with new song “Tithe” and played a whopping twenty-three songs as well as a FIVE-song encore and finally ended the night with old favorite “Ten Minutes.”

Even given their stellar vocals and incredible power, their set wasn’t without a few hiccups. Guitarist Jim Suptic’s attempt to play “Campfire Kansas” acoustically was thwarted by an out-of-tune guitar forcing him to go electric instead. Shortly after, frontman Matthew Pryor’s mic went out mid-song but only momentarily. The audience didn’t seem to care though as the late twenty-somethings moshed, reliving 2003.

I’m only familiar with their most recent album (on repeat) but based on the lack of movement and questioning looks I quickly caught on that fans aren’t down with their new sound. In doing my research the evolution of their music has definitely gone from pop-punk to a much more electro-rock sound. I like it. A lot. It’s now. It’s relevant. It’s 2011. But their fans don’t. At least they didn’t seem to. This is a hugely popular indie-rock band with a fan base that doesn’t appear to like change but that’s exactly what they’ll have to do as The Get Up Kids have evolved and matured. Sorry emo-kidsters of ‘03, just like your favorite band has, it is now time for you too to grow up.
