LIVE REVIEW: Rodrigo Y Gabriela @ Fox Theater 9/23/2009
In a beautiful place where mariachi meets metal, there lies the unique thrashing guitar duo of Rodrigo y Gabriela. With hints of their grimy metal upbringings hinged on some absolutely show-stopping and extremely fast guitar rhythms, their show at The Fox Theater was two full on hours of uninterrupted, jaw-opening awe, and more booty shaking than we thought possible from the somewhat older crowd. Hailing from Mexico City, these two never cease to amaze. From tributes to Metallica and Pantera to White Stripes features, there are really no words that can truly describe the duo’s utter talent. It’s something that must be experienced live.
Playing the exact same guitar with different pickup setups, it was quite clear that Rodrigo thoroughly enjoyed the spotlight; often leading the crowd in our own complimentary hand clap variations, while Gabriela sat quietly annihilating her instrument. With Gabriela’s limited English skills, we don’t blame her for keeping quiet, but when she did make a peep it was either to either swear about how amazing we were (which sounded adorable coming out of her mouth) or to command us to dance repeatedly throughout the night. Two words to Rodrigo y Gabriela: Absolutely stunning.
