Mister Lies @ The Echo, LA 1/10/13
For a lineup consisting of so many fresh-faced acts, The Echo was packed with a crowd eager to catch an early glimpse of the electronic scene to come. Los Angeles locals Matthewdavid and Dream Panther provided support for the Chicago headliner Mister Lies.
After hearing their recorded material, we had high hopes for 3-piece Dream Panther, however even with tangible instruments, their ambient dream pop fell flat. Perhaps it is just too early in their lifespan to take a full reading on their performance. With some time and more implementation of their instruments the group could possibly make a name for themselves.
We are still a little confounded by Matthewdavid’s skillful and surprising mix of dubstep and trip-hop. This amalgamation is even more surprising when it comes from his lanky, towering frame. The LA artist won over the crowd easily with his deep beats and warm stage presence.
Dubstep has seemed to become a taboo word within the independent music community, however artists like Mister Lies are what to keep in mind when this word arises. Mixing ambient sounds with carefully placed beats and samples, musical savant Nick Zanca will persuade your body to get into the groove.
