Microsoft + Yeasayer Secret Show @ Longshoremen’s Hall 5/8
How do you gather a bunch of hipsters in one place and introduce them to a new phone that doesn’t have an “i” in front of it? Well, you throw a FREE secret show at an undisclosed venue with a band buzzing like a hot and bothered wasp nest. Hmmm, how about Brooklyn’s own Yeasayer?
Earlier on in the week, Yeasayer announced via Facebook page “San Fran Clan. We are being transported to your lovely city to play a free jam this Saturday. Somewhere in Fisherman’s Wharf. Stay tuned.” And stay tuned the hipsters of San Francisco did. I mean, fixed gears stopped peddling and Blue Bottle Coffee closed down.
The location of the show wasn’t announced until 3 hours before the show and it was a venue that no one has ever heard of—Longshoremen’s Hall . It’s is a meeting place for what was described to me as a “Union for Seamen.” (yes, say it aloud, it’s funny).
Luckily, we didn’t have to brave the massive line for the show and got in early to talk to some promoters who were carrying around the new Windows phone, Kin. The phones are actually pretty cheap, and pretty cool, if you’re not already carrying around an iPhone. The small version costs $49, and the larger iPhone-like version is $100 (with a 2-year agreement, of course). And, I would’ve played with said phones, but I was busy double-fisting the free drinks that Microsoft (Thanks Billy!) provided.
The goal of these phones is to connect your ‘online social life’ by connecting your Email, Facebook, Twitter, and a few other applications you might be using. Kin reps had been carrying around the phones for a couple of weeks and seemed to love them for their ease of use. [No word on if any were left on a bar stool.] We tip our hats off to Microsoft and Verizon for coming up with such a cool idea (the show, not the phone) in order to debut a new device to a social group that could care less.
Yeasayer played 45-minutes, songs off of their latest album, Odd Blood, and a few songs from their 2007 release All Hour Cymbals. If you’ve yet to board the Yeasayer train, see below for some free songs, and a video of their song ‘Ambling Alp.’ Click on any image to go see the evenings pictures.
