LIVE REVIEW: Matt & Kim + Papa @ The Observatory, Santa Ana 3/8/13
Friday night there was no denying that the lineup at The Observatory was going to pack a punch to kick off the weekend.
The crowd was wise to pack the place early in order to catch the Los Angeles powerhouse that is Papa. Orange County has endlessly expounded their love for Papa, rightfully so. On their Instagram feed Papa returned the sentiment, saying “Y’all are good neighbors, we’ll lend you sugar anytime.” Their standout tune for the night, “Put Me To Work,” brought a harder edge to their sound and a possible glimpse into the
vibe for their next album.
Matt & Kim have so far spent this year touring as support for Passion Pit, but Orange County had the privilege of witnessing their first headlining show of 2013. In return, eager fans showed their love from the very second the duo stepped on stage. Opening with “Let’s Go” off newest release Lightning, Matt & Kim made it clear that their show is about tearing it up, dancing your ass off, and having a damn good time.
Although the two-piece’s sound has evolved over the years, they have managed to keep their live set fresh and have done it without adding a single extra touring member. By keeping it simple, but still packing venues with so much energy, the two have set a high standard for live performances across the board.
Best exhibiting the vibe of a Matt & Kim show were four dudes fully clad in banana costumes bobbing around in the crowd. As they kicked off their classic jam “Yea Yeah” Kim demanded that the bunch get up to crowd surf, to which they happily obliged.
