LIVE REVIEW: Coltrane Motion @ Arlene’s Grocery 6/2/10

Chicago duo Coltrane Motion claims to be inspired by “the last 40 years of pop music,” with an impressively varied collection of songs ranging from infectious ’60s pop to jittery electronic rock. At the second (and probably more sparsely attended) of their two NYC shows last week, they were unfazed by the small crowd and played with a tremendous amount of energy, stumbling around the stage and contorting themselves into every awkward position imaginable without missing a note. What they lacked in members, they more than made up for in enthusiasm, sweat, and volume – especially volume. They conjured up a surprisingly huge wall of electronic beats, synthesizers and guitar, topped with catchy pop melodies. Their set included a few songs from their brand new album, Hello Ambition, released the previous day on Datawaslost.
