LIVE REVIEW: Cold Cave, North Highlands and Oberhofer at Solar One
On Saturday, NYC’s solar-powered “Green Energy, Arts, and Education Center,” hosted an outdoor Earth Day show with Andrew WK as the emcee and between-sets DJ.
Young NYC band Oberhofer has a similar appeal to Surfer Blood and Real Estate, with straightforward, instantly memorable guitar pop. When he isn’t singing catchy melodies, frontman Brad Oberhofer is prone to lapsing into excited noises and falsetto oohs.
Like Oberhofer, local chamber pop quintet North Highlands was recently featured among the L Magazine’s 2010 “8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear.” Singer Brenda Malvini’s shy, hair-in-her-eyes persona belies her surprisingly rich, powerful voice.
Cold Cave’s brooding synth pop may be better suited for dark clubs than outdoor shows, but at least the day had turned overcast and windy by the time they went on. The current lineup has Jennifer Clavin, formerly of Mika Miko, replacing Caralee McElroy on keyboards and vocals.
