Bethany Cosentino sings with old soul heartbreak and a perfect rock and roll voice that is sweet and clear. Often, it seems she’s on the losing end of love gone wrong (“That’s Not Our Deal” was the highlight of the night, and is easily one of the best songs of the year). She comes across as smart and fun (see the video for “When I’m with You” costarring Ronald Mcdonald as her love interest), but last night at the GAMH she looked the part of the sultry heartbreaker with her miniskirt, thigh high stockings, boots, an exposed back, and cool brown bangs. I had a crush on her before based solely on her songwriting and her voice, but last night she looked hot! She announced that she was turning 24 next week, and she seemed more womanly and dangerous than when she opened last year with the Vivian Girls.
The first night of the tour with Sonny and the Sunsets (great opening set) was sold out and a little rowdy. The fans moshed, stage dove, and commanded a “Fuck Yeah, Giants” from Cosentino (who’s from LA). The band seemed in need of some practice though, there were a few meetings between Cosentino and the awesome Bobb Bruno, and Cosentino admitted to forgetting a few songs, but it only added to the charm. Besides “When I’m with You” and “That’s not our Deal,” other highlights were “Boyfriend” and “Over the Ocean.”
