FREELOADER FRIDAY: Twin Shadow, Adam Stephens, Royal Baths, The Black Angels

September 10. 2010 | By Jason Jurgens

1. Adam Haworth Stephens “Second Mind” (We Live on Cliffs out 9/28 via Saddle Creek)

A little bit of a Ray LaMontagne vibe, subtle organ in the background, ambling guitar riffs.

2. The Black Angels “Telephone” (off Phosphene Dream)

Take a trip back to the LSD days of the 60s with this Austin psych rock band. Dude sounds like the lead from The Guess Who.

3. Royal Baths “Nikki Don’t”

The latest Woodsist addition has a clear Lou Reed/Velvet Underground obsession. Garage rock = San Francisco these days. Doesn’t it?

4. Twin Shadow “Savannah Howl” (off a limited 7″ from Terrible Records)

An obsession out of Brooklyn with a sultry 80s synth pop sound that caught the attention of Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. It’s that good.
