TRACKS OF THE WEEK – 8/1/19 Edition

August 01. 2019 | By Wayne Jessup

Getting our metaphorical engine running, this week kicks off with “Feelings’, a woozy gem off of Cuco’s debut LP, Para Mi, suggesting thatHawthorne, CA as a launching pad for bedroom geniuses is not a one-off situation. He’ll be bringing the love to San Jose 8/1 at the Plaza De César Chávez, before heading to Summerstage in NYC 8/18, and a pair of Australian shows: Sydney 8/31 and Melbourne 9/1. Moving into the desert, Joshua Tree is the gift that never stops giving, and Landers, CA based duo Landroid bless us with “Yellow Sea” from their forthcoming Imperial Dunes, releasing 9/13 on Mojave Beach Records. If you need a reason to head to the desert, their release show will be in Joshua Tree on 9/14, and they’ll also appear at the Firelight Festival in Landers on 9/20, and at the Halloween Extravaganza in Twentynine Palms on 10/26.

If you’re looking for a road truly less travelled, Highway 58 cuts across the state from Barstow all the way to the coast. Santa Margarita is the home of Jade Jackson, and “Bottle It Up”, from her new LP Wilderness is a powerful reminder of the impact of California on country music. Sharp eyes will note the stage of the legendary Pioneertown roadhouse Pappy and Harriet’s in the video.Back to LA, Cartalk is the project of Chelsea “Chuck” Moore, and new single “Noonday Demon” has us entranced. Sarah from Illuminati Hotties provides a production assist, and we’re looking forward to more Cartalk. Finishing off at home in the Bay, SF’s Nobody’s Baby will see their debut EP released on 8/16. “Heartache” is the cut keeping our attention, and the band features members of The Atom Age and Dirty Denim. Catch them live on 8/1 at the SF Eagle and 9/8 at the Ivy Room in Albany, CA.
