Steve Brodsky, best of 2009

December 20. 2009 | By Jason Jurgens

Steve Brodsky, owner of Figurehead Management and visionary behind Mr. Roboto Presents lays the smack down on his best 0f 2009.

I also work out of Different Fur Studios in the Mission District…a true hub for musical expression in the Bay Area with a rich history, which allows me access to all different types of music professionals from bands to managers and label folks!

1. Mayer Hawthorne – “Just Ain’t gonna work out”
- A NJB from Detroit making Motown proud, oh yeah and he’s one of Snoop Dogg’s favorite new artists!

2. Dirty Projectors -  “Stillness is the Move”
-I love so many things about this song my one sentence description limit was impossible to stick too.

3. YG -  “Toot It & Boot It”
-Youth a stripped down beat and after all this time a brand new way to say ‘hit it and quit it’.

4. Animal Collective – “My Girls”
-Thanks to my friends taking me to the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur and getting to witness this song live and in the most unbelievable setting imaginable!

5. Phoenix – “1901″
-Yeah, I know the band was featured in a car commercial but it’s one of the best pop rock records since The Strokes Is This it. Right?

6. Sleigh Bells – “Ring Ring”
-A new band that’s to me a little bit MIA, B-52′s, The Neptunes and Fugazi go with a Parliment “Can You Get To That” on this sleeper track!

7. Keri Hilson ft. Lil Wayne – “Turnin Me On”
-I was in the car driving to work when I heard this song pulled over and asked who produced it on Twitter cause the beat hit me that hard on first listen.

8. Jack Penate – “Tonight’s Today”
-This was the song that came out last summer that should be playing at every summer BBQ next year!

9. Miike Snow – “Animal”
-If there was a second cut on this record anywhere near as strong as this one this would be Coldplay big!

10. Das Racist – “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (Wallpaper Remix)”
-Here’s to hoping that the next incarnation of this song touches on all the beauty that is the combination KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

Honorable Mention: Edward Sharpe and Magentic Zeros “Home” - Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Zero (Animal Collective Remix)” – Grizzly Bear “Two Weeks” – Cass McCombs “Dream Girl” – Fitz and the Tantrums “Breaking The Chains of Love” – The XX “Islands / Crystallized”  – Wallpaper “T-Rex ” – Anything w/ Gucci Mane!
