The Dirty Birds hit the Independent”s stage with their big band funk rock right from the start. With three horns, a harmonica, guitar, bass, and drums, the first tune got everyone up and dancing, ready for

Sister Sparrow“s entrance. And enter she did, with an energetic performance and voice that kept everyone going through the whole show.

Sister Sparrow (Arleigh Kincheloe) has a bigger voice than you would ever expect. If the band all took a break during the middle of a song, it wouldn”t end because she can carry the music with just her voice alone. Constantly dancing and looking right into the audience, she connects with the crowd and somehow her energy is contagious.

The high point of the evening for us was “Make It Rain,” a song that seems difficult to pull off, let alone make shine, with its speedy tempo and fast changes. And the cover of the night was AC/DC”s “Back In Black,” which, in the band”s hands, sounds like it was written for horns and harmonica in addition to the traditional guitar/bass/drums.

The Alan Evans Trio opened with their funky, mostly instrumental blend of blues and funk. A perfect companion to  Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Evans” trio mixed originals and covers of Sly Stone and Cream to the delight of everyone in the audience.
